Powerful Tools for Caregivers

What is Powerful Tools for Caregivers?

Powerful Tools for Caregivers includes six sessions
for a small group led by a trained facilitator. In these
sessions caregivers are given tools and strategies to
better handle unique caregiver challenges. They will
also develop skills and confidence to better care for
themselves while caring for others.

This nationally recognized program is based on the
highly successful Chronic Disease Self-Management
Program developed by Dr. Kate Lorig and her
colleagues at Stanford University.

During the class, caregivers learn ways to improve:

  • Self-Care Behaviors - increased exercise, use of
    relaxation techniques and medical checkups.

  • Management of Emotions - reduced guilt, anger
    and depression.

  • Self-Efficacy - increased confidence in coping
    with care giving demands.

  • Use of Community Resources - increased
    utilization of community services.

What Participants Say About Powerful Tools for Caregivers:

“There was a common bond. We were all dealing with some of the same issues. We shared our stories and learned ways to cope. I learned that it was important to take care of me.”

“After taking this class I am a more confident caregiver! Having tools to
resolve problems is a definite advantage in becoming a better caregiver
and a happier, wiser, healthier me… and a healthier ‘us’!”
